felony is the most serious criminal offense with which an individual or
corporation may be charged. In the State of Florida felonies are classified
into: third degree felonies, second degree felonies, first degree felonies,
and life or capital felonies. The degree of the felony is defined by the
Florida Statutes.
Felonies dealing with violence, such as battery on a law enforcement
officer, aggravated battery, murder, are considered more serious and generally
carry greater penalties.
Felonies dealing with property, such as criminal mischief causing property
damage in excess of $1,000.00, burglary, theft, possession of cocaine
or other drugs, are considered less serious and therefore generally carry
lesser penalties.
