Alimony
is spousal support. In making an award of alimony, the court must consider
a number of factors. The court will look at the standard of living acquired
during the course of the marriage. The court may or may not award alimony
based upon need of a party and ability of the other party to pay. There
are also a number of other elements for the court to consider, including
the length of the marriage, the age of the parties, the health of the
parties, and assets and liabilities of the parties, and ultimately a consideration
of what is fair and just.
There are several different types of alimony. The alimony awarded may
be permanent periodic, rehabilitative, temporary, bridge the gap, lump
sum or any combination thereof.
